This website has been created as a place for requesting information about, and copies of My Father’s Love. It is also offerred as a place where families can exchange information and feelings.
My Father’s Love is a FREE 18-page book that was created as a way for children to preserve the love of their father. It was written directly following the World Trade Center tragedy by a NJ educator and Mom of three young children who lost their father.
Children work through the book remembering and recording events and information. The book is presented in a familiar, loving format with fill-ins, multiple choice, complete the sentences, and a space for drawing and photographs. It has colorful clip-art drawings.
The book touches on the death, and feelings that children had then, and have now. Several pages at the end of the book offer ways to create routines that will help the child to continue to honor their father’s memory. It ends by offering a chance for the child to write a letter and “say goodbye”, an important step in grieving.
It comes with a guide to assist the surviving parent in working through the booklet with their child.
The book is something that will likely be done over time, and then cherished as a place that holds happy times and recordings of the love that was shared, and will never die.
My Father’s Love was awarded a grant by The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation for printing and distribution. Over 800 copies have made their way to families in the last month.
Many bereavement counselors, groups, churches, synagogues, and private families have found the book to be an effective way to help children. Young children especially learn by doing. In working through the exercises in the book, they are able to remember and begin to talk about feelings for their father.
Although the book was designed for this use, many adults have used it to help process their grief in a loving way. Mothers of infants, or who have yet to give birth have used it to record information about their husbands to share with their child at a later time.
An educator with over 25 years experience wrote My Father’s Love. It was co-conceived by the mother of three small children who lost their father in the Tragedy. The founders of Sundance School, an innovative renowned center for early childhood education wrote the guide.
The authors plan to complete My Mother’s Love for those children who have lost mothers, then more books dealing with other primary relationships, such as sisters, brothers, and grandparents. The books are copyrighted, and being considered for publication.
LOVE NEVER DIES. It is our profound hope that if you have lost anyone dear that you know that although you may have lost their presence in your future, nothing can take away the love you shared.
